Position Profile
This is an exciting opportunity to lead the establishment of a new Nurse Practitioner- Mental Health lead service in the RPH Emergency Department. A Model of care has been developed, based on a successfully evaluated model established at the Royal Alfred Hospital in Sydney NSW as a safe and robust alternative for MH consumers that present to ED.
The role of the MH NP is to provide brief, targeted, evidence based mental health assessment, intervention and therapeutic care for individuals presenting to the ED, and to support ED staff in responding to people in mental distress, coordinating care, disposition, and follow-up arrangements through direct ED assessment and intervention with additional outpatient follow up. Intervention is individualised, recovery focused and trauma sensitive and determined at the point of triage.
This model of care encompasses a MH NP, based in the Emergency Department (ED) at Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) and encompasses a NP outpatient component allowing comprehensive follow up and support of MH consumers.
The Nurse Practitioner provides a clinical service in collaboration with other health professionals to diagnose, treat and manage a patient’s health status in accordance with National legislation. The Nurse Practitioner performs advanced physical assessment, orders diagnostic tests, interprets the results of these tests, initiates referrals to relevant health providers, and prescribes appropriate medications and other therapies as needed. The Nurse Practitioner provides clinical leadership as appropriate. The Nurse Practitioner practices within their scope of practice considerate of the Nursing and Midwifery Board’s Nursing Practice Decision Flowchart. Ongoing credentialing to a scope of specialty practice is a requirement for all nurse practitioners.
