Senior NGS Technologist and Deputy Head for Biomedical Sequencing Facility (m/f/d)
The Biomedical Sequencing Facility is an academic core facility and technology platform dedicated to next generation sequencing (NGS), including single-cell genomics and a wide range of other assays. It is based at the CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
We are searching for an experienced and motivated scientist who will join the Biomedical Sequencing Facility as a Senior NGS Technologist and take on the role of Deputy Head. You will lead the wet lab of the facility, including NGS service delivery, assay development and validation, and support for customers and collaborators.
Your Profile
* Background in molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, or a related field (PhD-level or comparable expertise)
* Strong wet-lab expertise and practical experience working with DNA, RNA, and NGS technologies
* Leadership skills including the ability to teach, delegate, and lead-by-example, and to manage the day-to-day operations of the lab
* Experience in an academic core facility, a clinical laboratory, or a biotech/pharma company is a plus
* Friendly, collaborative mindset, and motivation to work in an international, interdisciplinary environment
* Leader and team player with strong communication skills and a proactive “getting things done” mindset
* Written and oral communication skills in English (German language skills are not required)
Your Tasks
* Ensure that the Biomedical Sequencing Facility delivers the most relevant services flawlessly and on a swift timeline for all customers
* Conduct and teach a broad range of sequencing assays with high experimental rigor and accurate documentation
* Manage the day-to-day operations of the lab, including scheduling, purchasing, quality control, billing, recruitment, and accreditation
* Follow and anticipate important developments in the field, identify and establish new technologies, work closely with pilot users
* Troubleshoot technical problems in sample preparation and sequencing workflows
* Provide customer support, teach methods and best practices to collaborating scientists, help organize technology workshops
You will be part of the Biomedical Sequencing Facility (BSF) based at CeMM. The BSF is Austria’s first and leading center of expertise for next-generation sequencing in biomedicine. Under the scientific leadership of Christoph Bock, the BSF contributes to biomedical research and precision medicine in Vienna, Austria, and beyond. The BSF is equipped with the latest technology for high-throughput genomics and powerful scientific computing infrastructure. The BSF’s mandate includes a strong focus on technology development, contribution to study design and bioinformatic data analysis, as well as training and teaching best practices in sequencing technology and genomic medicine. Furthermore, it supports biomedical scientists and clinicians in the development of custom NGS protocols and in the bioinformatic analysis of the resulting datasets.

* Starting annual gross salary of at least EUR 66,500 (the salary will reflect the successful candidate’s qualifications and can be higher)
* Flexible start date. Open-ended full-time contract available after an initial contract period of 7 months. Support for relocating to Vienna is provided.
