Alongside management of a developing Data Science unit, the successful applicant will be expected to use their transferable management skills to also oversee geospatial analytics work or other advanced analytics projects as capacity requires.
This permanent full-time position reports to the Senior Manager Data Science and Analytics and is based at our State Office in Belmont. This position is one of four manager positions within the broader Data Science and Analytics team of around 20 people. This is a collaborative, flexible and high-performing team; and operates as an in-house consulting function for analysis and decision support services, translating business problems into:
* Analysis;
* Automated information products;
* Advanced analytics and data science services; and/or
* Advice and recommendations.
Current members of the team have diverse backgrounds with qualifications including physics, mathematics, engineering, law, psychology, and business, and have previously worked across the government, private, academic, consulting, and defence sectors.
What you will do:
As Manager Data Science you’ll be responsible for leadership and management of your unit (consisting of Data Scientists and Business Intelligence Analysts, at various levels), including:
* Overseeing the delivery of data science products, services, and projects;
* Steering and championing the direction of data science at St John WA, including maintaining industry knowledge of best practices and identifying appropriate solutions tailored to our operating environment;
* Managing day-to-day operations including task allocation, scheduling, scope refinement and decision making as required;
* Investing in the team’s people through coaching, training programs, and structured development pathways;
* Establishing appropriate processes, templates, and frameworks to support delivery of high-quality products in a timely manner;
* Collaborating with other Managers within the Data Science and Analytics team, as part of a flexible and high-performing collective, to balance resourcing and ensure consistent messaging and approaches across the team; and
* Engaging with the Senior Manager Data Science and Analytics to agree priorities in line with strategic objectives, contractual requirements, and operational imperatives.
What you will need:
* 4+ years of experience in data science focused roles;
* Demonstrated experience in leadership and/or formal management roles – including the ability to manage, develop, and support a high-performing team;
* Excellent critical thinking skills;
* Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of best practices in converting data to actionable information to inform decision making;
* Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate between business and technical domains; and
* Strong project management skills and demonstrated experience delivering analytics or data science projects, preferably in a large and complex organisation.
Qualifications:
* Tertiary qualifications in a quantitative subject (such as data science, mathematics, business, science, engineering, or information technology) or extensive professional experience in a relevant field.
