Research Infrastructure Systems Senior Technologist
As part of the Digital Research Infrastructure (DRI) team, you will supervise and provide technical leadership to a geographically dispersed team of (APS/Contractor) IT professionals. You will work collaboratively to provide a secure Windows and Linux service and related technology required to meet researcher needs.
Reporting to the Discipline Lead of Research Infrastructure Systems, you will work under limited direction and oversee a team to grow and maintain a highly productive Windows and Linux capability.
Additionally, you will maintain technically complex and novel research system administration practices across Defence digital science platforms.
You will work closely and collaboratively with other team leads; most notably within Digital Research Infrastructure, Computational & Data Intensive Sciences (CDIS) and Laboratory and Experimental Systems (LES) directorates. Ensure that there is alignment in our planning and day-to-day services; and that the offerings are fit-for-purpose, secure and meet DSTG’s strategic initiatives.
You will lead all aspects of the delivery of Research Infrastructure Systems (RIS) services and support. This will include relevant aspects of the provision of secure capabilities for major projects.
Key Duties:
* Lead and drive innovation within RIS in alignment with DSTG’s enterprise roadmaps.
* Lead the day-to-day delivery of RIS support services.
* Provide leadership and technical direction, including managing workloads, priorities to progress of system changes for RIS.
* Provide system administration and troubleshooting support for complex research systems (e.g. Linux, Linux virtualisation, Windows and Windows virtualisation via on-premise cloud infrastructure).
* Manage security initiatives and vulnerabilities, including monitoring and responding to security incidents and Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) in a unique research-specific threat environment.
* Maintain, upgrade, and manage Windows and Linux Operating Systems, software, and infrastructure, including Change and Configuration Management.
* Management of vendor support contracts for Operating Systems and associated software products.
* Diagnose and resolve complex issues and system outages, including repair and recovery from software and hardware failures.
* Mentor and educate staff in the development of technical, project, and related organisational/support skills.
About our Team:
The Digital Research Infrastructure (DRI) team, as part of the wider Scientific Computing (SC) branch, enables and accelerates Defence science and technology research and protects assets in DSTG’s digital research environments.
SC does this by provisioning and supporting scientific computing infrastructure that is well-managed, sustainable and scalable; continuing to invest in innovative centralised digital research infrastructure and services, while divesting commodity distributed ICT infrastructure and services; and developing new Scientific Computing practises and technologies.
The DRI directorate provides secure, effective and efficient digital research and eResearch infrastructure and related systems where a sovereign capability is required for Defence’s S&T capabilities.
Our Ideal Candidate:
The Senior Technologist ideally will have detailed knowledge and previous experience in:
* Demonstrated leadership experience in high-performing small to medium sized teams of IT systems administrators.
* Proven experience in driving customer-focused excellence and applying critical thinking and problem-solving skills to meet science and technology outcomes and experience analysing complex technical configurations.
* Demonstrated well-developed written and verbal communication skills, and an ability to communicate across a broad technical and non-technical audience to understand needs and identify appropriate uses of technology to drive business improvements.
* Experience in the design, implementation and system administration of Linux operating systems and environments, ideally with Red Hat Satellite and Canonical Landscape.
* Experience in the design, implementation and system administration of Windows Operating Systems environments.
* Demonstrated experience in cloud technologies with a focus on template provisioning of complex virtual environments.
* High level skills and experience in scripting in at least one of: Python, Bash, PowerShell.
* Experience in automation of system administrative tasks through the use of scripting, Ansible playbooks, Puppet modules and manifests, Configuration Manager.
* A strong understanding of relevant security frameworks including the Defence Security Principles Framework, ASD Essential 8 and Information Security Manual.
