This position reports to
R&D Team Lead
Your role and responsibilities
In this role, you will define engineering opportunities for the ABB switchgear portfolio. You will specify requirements and develop novel protection concepts for evolving applications such as microgrids, energy storage systems, or new topologies for sustainable energy generation and distribution. You will perform experiments, model the underlying physical phenomena, and utilize state-of-the-art simulations to develop new protection solutions for medium and low voltage grids. You will engage with cross-functional teams inside and outside the company and work together to demonstrate these concepts in prototypes serving as starting points for products. Further, you will contribute to the definition of the team research roadmap and to the management of the research projects. The work model for the role is: #hybrid. You will be mainly accountable for:
1. Conducting applied research in the area of system protection and switching
2. Developing sustainable protection solutions for upcoming applications of switchgear, e.g., for reliable energy distribution, grid integration of renewable energies, or integration of energy storage systems
3. Applying advanced simulation tools to survey and validate sophisticated protection concepts
4. Contributing to the planning, setup, and execution of experiments
5. Driving research activities, generating intellectual property, and writing scientific publications
6. Closely cooperating with scientists and engineers from universities and global ABB divisions
