Organizational Setting
The Department of Safeguards carries out the IAEA’s duties and responsibilities as the world’s nuclear inspectorate, supporting global efforts to stop the spread of nuclear weapons. The primary role of the Department is to develop and implement IAEA safeguards to ensure that there is no diversion of declared nuclear material from peaceful activities and no indications of undeclared nuclear material or activities in a State as a whole.
The Office of Safeguards Analytical Services (SGAS) is responsible for the analysis of inspection samples collected in the field. Located about 45 km south of Vienna in Seibersdorf, SGAS is organized into three sections: the Nuclear Material Laboratory (NML), the Environmental Sample Laboratory (ESL) and the Coordination and Support Section (CSS).
Main Purpose
Reporting to the Nuclear Chemistry Team Leader of the Nuclear Material Laboratory (NML) and working under the general supervision of a Senior Laboratory Technician, the Laboratory Technician prepares reagents, control samples and UF6 sampling bottles for Safeguards Inspectors. He/she also supports processing inspection samples and provides other technical support to the Nuclear Chemistry Team, such as maintaining completed samples and adequate laboratory supplies, and assisting in the maintenance and calibration of various laboratory measurement systems.
Functions / Key Results Expected
Within established standards and procedures:
1. Clean and assemble UF6 sampling bottles, perform helium leak testing and assign certificates of UF6 bottles before they are used by safeguards inspectors in the field.
2. Prepare waste solutions and collect solid inspection samples to be wasted as solid waste and prepare them for shipment/disposal.
3. Perform routine wasting of inspection samples after processing, archive stock solutions and archive samples from storage.
4. Record flows of nuclear materials to waste solutions and maintain/correct the accountancy records.
5. Perform routine preparations and treatments of uranium and thorium inspection samples.
6. Prepare subsamples for isotopic composition measurements and impurities determinations.
7. Perform routine density determinations of uranium and thorium from inspection samples.
8. Assist lab staff with the maintenance and calibration of laboratory instrumentation to ensure the proper operation of equipment, such as analytical balances, densitometers, leak detectors and titrators.
9. Prepare laboratory reagents and quality control solutions using certified reference materials or in-house reference materials and completed sample solutions for disposal.
10. Maintain stock of laboratory supplies, such as spare parts etc.
The incumbent may perform his/her work in areas involving exposure to radioactive materials. Therefore, as an Occupationally Exposed Worker, he/she must be medically cleared by VIC Medical Service and is subject to an appropriate radiation and health monitoring programme, in accordance with the IAEA's Radiation Safety Regulations.

Required Expertise
Function
* Chemistry Analytical Chemistry: Practical expertise in basic chemistry practices in the laboratory, including weighing principles, glassware cleanliness, handling of acids and bases, and preparation of standard solutions.
* Administrative Support: MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) Experience with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and the ability to use databases.
Qualifications, Experience and Language skills
* Completed secondary education, preferably in the field of chemistry and/or information technology.
* Minimum of three years of relevant chemistry experience in a laboratory environment; experience working in a radiochemistry laboratory an asset.
* Knowledge of the safety measures applied when handling radioactive materials, radiation protection and monitoring of radioactivity an asset.
* Experience in handling radioactive samples, waste management and waste disposal an asset.
* Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
* Testing to IAEA standard may be part of the process.
Note: In-line with nuclear security requirements, persons undertaking the Laboratory Technician (Nuclear Material) role are required to undergo security backgrounds checks.
Remuneration
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at EUR 43237 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), 6 weeks' annual vacation, pension plan and health insurance.
