As Austria's largest research and technology organisation for applied research, we are dedicated to making substantial contributions to solving the major challenges of our time, climate change and digitalisation. To achieve our goals, we rely on our specific research, development and technology competencies, which are the basis of our commitment to excellence in all areas. With our open culture of innovation and our motivated, international teams, we are working to position AIT as Austria's leading research institution at the highest international level and to make a positive contribution to the economy and society. Our Research Group Hybrid Electric Aircraft Technologies, part of the Center for Transport Technologies, is looking for new Ingenious Partner for our location in Vienna. Our focus lies on the delivery of Hybrid Electric Aircraft, which presents significant technological challenges in achieving carbon neutrality in air transport, as outlined by the European Green Deal. We develop new technologies for high energy density batteries for next generation airliners. As a member of a growing team, you will perform research and be involved in the execution of ambitious and large-scale European research projects funded by the Horizon Europe and Clean Aviation programmes.CENTER FOR TRANSPORT TECHNOLOGIESYou develop methods for accelerated multi-physical and virtual testing of batteries from cells to modules/packs with focus on aerospace requirements for battery performance and safety. You design optimized test campaigns, support their execution, and manage testing data and data interoperability. You interlink testing and simulation experts and instrumentation, supporting the design of airworthy batteries and their integration into hybrid electric system architectures and components for next generation climate neutral aircraft. You interface with experienced scientists and engineers in the field of aerospace across Europe. You work directly with European Institutions and international partners from research and industry on multi-annual large-scale collaborative projects, such as HIGHSPIN, HELENA and MATISSE, and future projects. You build your own network, contribute to the definition of our strategic research direction and support the preparation of proposals for new projects – Together, we bring ideas to life. You publish your results in high-ranking journals and will support other scientists in doing so.Your efforts will contribute to the success of our current research projects portfolio, enabling next generation Li-ion batteries to be successfully implemented in future hybrid electric aircraft architectures. You report your results to research and industry stakeholders and disseminate the achievements in international conferences and scientific peer-reviewed journals.Your Qualifications As An Ingenious PartnerMaster or (preferably) Ph.D. level qualification in Electrical, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Physics (or related disciplines) with a focus on numerical modeling, design, testing, or data science.Proven experience (6+ years after the M.Sc. or 3+ years after the Ph.D.) in at least one of the three following thematic areas (plus proven interest and willingness to learn the other two): (i) battery testing at cell/module/system level, preferably including abuse/safety and high voltage, (ii) battery test design, (iii) battery virtual testing and data management. Relevant sub-areas are (for example): electrical energy storage or power systems modelling and testing, test design with DoE or ML methods, battery cell-to-system integration, battery monitoring and control (including sensors’ data processing). The candidate is expected to describe in his/her Cover Letter how his/her profile matches at least one of the three areas above. Should the candidate have a proven experience below the years indicated above and be successful in the selection process he/she may be re-classified as Junior Scientist.Experience with laboratory testing of batteries and/or electric power systems.Programming skills in one (or more) of the following languages: Python, LabView, MATLAB (including Simulink), C/C++ or similar. Expertise with state-of-the-art industrial design and computational tools (e.g., ANSYS/Modelica/Dymola) are also well regarded.Experience in working in industrial projects in aerospace (e.g., commissioned by Airbus or Leonardo) and/or European projects (e.g. Horizon Europe, Clean Aviation) is an asset.High level of motivation to develop a scientific/research career; Self-motivation and personal drive are an asset.Excellent communication skills in English, including proficiency in technical writing, which is mandatory. German is desirable. What To ExpectThe minimum gross annual salary on a full-time basis (38.5 h/week) according to the collective agreement is EUR 59,934.
