Institute for Spatial and Social-Ecological Transformation (ISSET)
Part-time, 30 hours/week
Starting April 01, 2025, and ending after 6 years.

Are you passionate about addressing contemporary spatial challenges, particularly those related to transport and accessibility? Are you driven to conduct impactful research that fosters more livable cities and regions? We are seeking a motivated PhD candidate to join the Institute for Spatial and Social-Ecological Transformations (ISSET), specifically the research unit Transformative Urban and Regional Economics.
What to expect
* Writing your dissertation: Most of your working time will be dedicated to academic advancement with the goal of earning a doctorate. In cooperation with the team at ISSET, under the guidance of dissertation supervisors, you will develop your own research ideas and implement them. The goal is to present the results at international workshops and conferences and to publish them in leading journals.
* Teaching: You will design and deliver courses yourself and contribute to teaching activities of your colleagues.
* Student supervision: You will support students in the preparation of their bachelor theses.
* Taking on organizational tasks: You will assist the institute with internal processes and its external presentation.
* Participation in research projects: You will have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge and apply your skills and abilities in various research contexts.
What you have to offer
* Academic degree: You have a diploma/master’s degree in Economics/Socioeconomics (or related fields) that qualifies you for enrollment in a doctoral program at WU. You have excellent grades and your diploma/Master thesis demonstrates your ability and interest in conducting your own research.
* Expertise and interest in spatial, urban, and/or transport topics: You have taken specializations in these fields, and/or have a strong interest in them.
* Willingness to contribute to the institute: You are enthusiastic about fostering a collaborative environment and engaging with colleagues across diverse social science disciplines and methodological perspectives.
* Quantitative research methods and tools: You have excellent knowledge of statistics/econometrics and corresponding software tools (e.g., Stata, R, Python).
* Language skills: You have excellent English skills, both spoken and written. Knowledge of German is desirable.
* Commitment: You work independently, take initiative, are reliable, and self-organized.
* Willingness to use multimedia teaching methods: You are prepared to use multimedia teaching and learning formats.
