The following vacancy at the Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien/Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, is hereby announced:
Director of the Paintings Gallery and the Graphic Collection
This position is to be occupied for 6 years, starting from 1 Oktober 2015.
The Paintings Gallery, one of the three internationally most significant Old Masters Collections in Vienna, is situated within the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, with about 1600 paintings. Highlights of the collection include works from Dutch Masters, old German Masters, Flemish painters like Jacob Jordaens and Peter Paul Rubens, and Italian masters such as Botticelli and Titian.
The Graphic Collection represents one of the most important collections in Austria, including drawings from masters like Dürer and Rembrandt, Gothic building sketches, print graphics, and photography.
The official mission of the Paintings Gallery and the Graphic Collection includes:
* The systematic extension of the existing collection and the development of new collections,
* Preservation and restoration of the collections,
* Exhibiting selected objects through permanent and temporary exhibitions,
* Inventory management and cataloguing,
* Publication of academic papers,
* Supporting university faculty and arts development.
Key responsibilities for the Director:
* Academic-artistic and administrative management of both units,
* Coordination of scholarship and collection evolution,
* Organizing exhibitions and education programs to engage a diverse audience,
* Human resources development and strategic planning for the collections,
* National and international positioning of the collections.
Minimum Requirements:
* University degree in art or cultural studies,
* Extensive knowledge of art history and theory, leadership experience in a museum or similar institution,
* Experience in exhibition organization, fundraising, and business protocols,
* Proficiency in German and English, additional languages are a plus.
Additional Qualifications:
* Experience with art universities, collectors, sponsors, and media,
* Human resources management skills and experience in team projects.
